Life woven in a thousand colors
In La Guajira Colombia, the Wayúu community understands, interprets and embodies life in its fabrics; those who tell stories with symbols and hundreds of colors. These fabrics are unique pieces made exclusively by the Wayúus and by no one else. A hand-woven bag can take 15-30 days depending on the technique used. It requires the highest possible concentration in your process.
This art of weaving has been passed down from generation to generation and is the livelihood of entire families.
There is a Wayúu legend about the origin of the art of weaving. Wale’kerü was a spider who taught the community to weave in exchange for a donkey or a goat. At dawn, the inhabitants of the ranchería were able to see all the pieces of art that she had woven during the night. The ready-to-weave threads came out of Wale’kerü's mouth, and with her legs she began to weave on a surface to show the designs of geometric figures that they managed to decipher.
